Creative Ideas for Family Time

Creative Ideas for Family Time

‘Want to make the most of family time? You don’t have to go on a lavish vacation or spend a fortune on photo shoots. In fact, you don’t have to spend much money at all. It’s all about the quality of time you spend together and how that adds value to your lives. Check out these creative ideas for family time, courtesy of Oakland Psychological Clinic.

Look for Events at Your Local Library

Your local library probably has tons of free activities for families. For instance, there may be kid-friendly book readings once a week. You take your kids to the library, and someone reads a book out loud. There are also community events, club meetings, and much more. Of course, you can also go to the library to find books as a family. Designate a reading night once a week, just like you would movie night. Everyone can benefit from a little less screen time.

Go All-Out for Home Movie Nights

Spruce up your standard movie night at home. Get some snacks from the dollar store, or move the furniture around in a theater-like setting. Put your phones on silent (or preferably in another room). Make the experience something special for the whole family.

Play Physical Family Games

Don’t limit your family game nights to board games. Also consider games that require some movement. Charades, Twister, Pictionary, tag…the possibilities are endless. You can still have traditional board game nights, but the physical games provide a chance to get active as a family.

Let Your Children Choose Activities

If you’re children feel involved with family night, they’re going to be even more excited about it. You could let them choose between three different activities if they are not old enough to do the planning on their own. If they are old enough, allow them to be a ‘project manager’ for the night. They get to pick the activity, the snack, the dinner (make it together!) or any other element of family time. Children love feeling empowered.

Camp in the Living Room or Backyard

If you have the ability to camp in your backyard, go for it! If not, you can still have a camping experience in your living room. Move some of the furniture around, and put mats on the floor. Make smores in the microwave instead of by the fire, and avoid all electronics for the night. This will feel like an adventure for your children, and you don’t even have to leave the property.

Spending time with the family is a great way to encourage positive communication. The memories you make now lay a foundation of bonding for the future. If you would like more advice that’s tailored to you family, contact Oakland Psychological Clinic.
